Looking for a doctor on the Peninsula

Anyone have recommendations for:
 
 
A gynecologist
An endocrinologist
An internist

I like the folks at HealthNow, but I want a mainstream doc as well. I'm finding it very hard to find a decent doctor. I could go to the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, but I've found them deeply underwhelming.

Began watching an awesome documentary on Billy Wilder tonight with Navarre. Reminded me of some of the better classes I had in grad school with the older Hollywood guys. The man was brilliant.

It was funny, though. A lot of the documentary is in what I think of as writer short hand. Wilder takes for granted that his interviewer understands what he's talking about when he gets into some rather sophisticated ideas and techniques. And, seeing as his interviewer was an Oscar winning director, I'm sure he did. And I get a lot of it. But Navarre was confused at several points. We had to pause so I could explain some basics of dramatic writing and narrative.

It's a strange reversal for me. Usually, it's the other way with Navarre explaining some medical procedure to me. It felt very strange to have that reversed. It also pointed out to me how much I take for granted. I just sort of assume that other people know the stuff I know.

I think we will be watching an awful lot of Billy Wilder films in the coming months.

Slapping Idiots - or not

It is incredibly hard watching people you know being idiots. Particularly when they are being idiots in ways you, yourself, used to be an idiot.

You find yourself wanting to shake them. Slap them. Hit them pretty damn hard. And then you realize, what you really wish you could so is go back and slap the you who made those mistakes, because you are, in some ways, still furious with yourself. And you are still living with the consequences, even though your life now is much better. But you realize you haven't reached that point of forgiving yourself. And that gives you pause.

Which doesn't stop you from wanting to slap the idiots around you. It's as if, somehow, you could forgive yourself if you manage to save someone else from the same idiocy. But most people don't want to be saved, and slapping idiots is a waste of energy that could be put to better use healing from your old mistakes.

And so. I am refraining from telling several people they are idiots, today.

Agave Sweetened Chocolate Chips (can be dairy free)

I have discovered that even the sugar in chocolate chips is too much for me. So, tonight [livejournal.com profile] krchicken  and I made agave sweetened chocolate chips. The recipe is as follows:

1 cup cocoa powder (we used Ghiradelli's)
1/3 cup and 1 tsp butter or coconut oil*
2/3 cup agave syrup
1 tsp vanilla extract


In a medium sauce pan, melt butter or coconut oil over low heat.
Add vanilla and agave nectar.
Bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
At exactly two minutes, remove pan from heat.
Stir in cocoa powder (quickly, otherwise it gums up).
Pour/scoop into greased pan/mold.
Chill.
Remove from mold and chop into pieces.

The texture, because of the agave nectar, will be a bit chewy. The flavor will be the same as regular semi-sweet chocolate.

*I haven't tried it with coconut oil, although that's what the original recipe called for, because I did not want coconuty flavored chocolate in my mint chip ice cream

Elimination Diet results ongoing

I'm still tweaking my diet, but here are a few solid conclusions:

Gluten = bad for me - it makes me very sick. You do not want details.
Peppers (chili peppers, bell peppers, red peppers, cayenne) = even worse than gluten - oh, my goodness, the rash, the swelling, the inflammation, the nausea.
Sugar = bad for me - sadly, this one gives me mood swings and increases my hunger.
Nightshades - bad for me - related to peppers (most peppers are nightshades) but not all nightshades are so severe. Tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, paprika, and pimentos appear to give me eczema.


Still up for debate:
pork
corn
dairy
chocolate

I've been eating all of those, and clearly something is still not right. At the moment I'm eliminating pork, to see if that's the culprit. I hope that's the culprit, because I don't want it to be any of the others...

Living Gluten Free

Seems like lots of my friends are trying the gluten free lifestyle these days, so here are a few of the tricks, tips, and items I've found really useful:
  • Leftovers - I always make enough for leftovers, because having something quick to eat for lunch or a snack the next day is priceless
  • Tinkyada Gluten Free Pasta - this is a godsend. I love the macaroni, the penne, and the fettucini. The texture on thinner noodles doesn't quite work for me. Always, cook it for a couple of minutes less than the package says. Stir regularly.
  • Amy's Gluten Free frozen meals - Wholefoods carries them, so do some Safeways near me. Pricey, but safe. Mac n Cheese is the best.
  • Trader Joe's Gluten Free Boxed Mac and Cheese - it even has dayglo orange cheese sauce!
  • Rice flour, sorghum flour, xanthan gum
  • Using rice flour and egg, you can make onion rings, fried fish, fried chicken, etc - and it will taste as good as the gluteny stuff
  • Gluten free baked goods are always better toasted
  • Wholefoods has a whole gluten free baked goods refrigerated section
  • Quinoa is a great alternative to couscous
  • Almond flour is great, but most store brands are too grainy and need to go through a food processor. Buying online can be a lot better.
  • Cream of buckwheat - for those who like hot cereals, this is a good choice

Elana's Pantry - gluten free and mostly sugar free - she uses agave nectar and lots of almond flour
Karina's Kitchen/Gluten Free Goddess - some great stuff here, also vegetarian
Gluten Free Mommy - some nice recipes here
Gluten Free Girl - has some interesting stuff, but I mostly use it as a starting off point and do my own modifications

Hmm. Apparently some of my issues with balance may be caused by nerve damage thanks to the Celiac disease. Which may improve in time. But it apparently can cause vertigo, too.

I really ought to look into the nervous system side of Celiac Disease some more. I wonder how connected it is to the numbness I get in my hands at night.

iPhone for Grandma

Any good ideas of where one could get a used iPhone?

My 91 year old grandmother has fallen in love with my iPhone. Not for its fun and fancy features. But for its touch screen, which is much easier for her to use than standard cell phone number pads. Also, she loves the speakerphone. She can actually hear the speakerphone. And now she wants one. However, I know she doesn't want the data plan at all.

I'm thinking finding a used one and getting her just a voice plan would work. I'm also looking around to see if there are any other phones better designed for older folks to use.

All suggestions welcome.

What I do for a living

More Star Trek fiction. I spent days watching DS9 to get the backstory and the speech cadences.
I've also been writing a superhero gossip column. Several weeks worth, now.

Pies and Legends

Made gluten free apple pie today, using WholeFoods premade pie crust. The top crust mostly fell apart upon baking, but it tasted great, so I count it as a win. I shall have to ask krchicken how she got the top to stay together when she did it.

Also watched the first ep of Legend of the Seeker, which I had only even vaguely heard of. Navarre and I snarked it throughout, but did watch the entire two hour thing on Hulu. Does it get any better? Is it worth continuing to watch? Seems to have a lot of standard tropes which are fun, but it's not really using them all that well. On the other hand, I support even semi-decent fantasy making it to tv, so I'm willing to keep watching. (And, no, I never did read the Goodkind books it's based on - should I?)

I felt sick yesterday, I am feeling much better today. And now it's time for bed, and yet again the weekend passes too quickly.
